Endless Memory
05:02
|
|||
Take my hand and rest your head on my shoulder
I feel these winter nights are growing colder
Let's throw the paper in the fire
Let's have another drink to feel the heat
Well this fire makes me think of September
When the winter was an innocent ember
I guess we should've known then
That any spark can start a flame
Well darling, I can't help but feeling
That your "I love you's" are losing their meaning
I feel it by the look in your eyes
I feel it by the twitch when our two hands meet
So I'm trying to hold this together
But it's like trying to command the weather
And though the fire heats the room
Outside the front door there's a different world
Darling I can't help but feeling
That your "I love you's" are losing their meaning
I feel it by the look in your eyes
I feel it by the twitch when our two hands meet
So before you go out into the open
Let's forget about the words that were spoken
And let's remember to a time
Of wordless love and endless memory

Street Signs
05:07
|
|||
These days are getting longer
There's a summer up ahead
There are bills out on the counter
But I'm laying in my bed
I'm staring at the ceiling
And the fan as it goes around
Its constant spinning motion
Feels a lot like my head right now
I caught a glimpse of you last night
Silhouetted by the evening light
Sitting at an old upright
And we sang together
And the sun began to rise
And bathed us with her light
And all the world seemed right
The moment that you entered
I'll drive down south, cigarette in my mouth
And an address written on my hand
With a bouquet and a button down
And the remnants of a man
I'll stare out at the street signs
Preparing every word I say
Needing to adhere to the script I wrote
And hoping that you'll do the same
Composure half restored
I show up at your door
Forgetting what I came there for
And I feel stupid
But as I look into your gentle eyes
Something comes across my restless mind
Maybe all love is to life
Is a lifeboat to get through it
In the midst of laughter
Memories will come on through
Engrained like the lines upon our palms
Or the gum upon our shoes
The valleys I have entered
You could send me to again
So I could run away, tail between my legs
And turn the TV on instead
I caught a glimpse of you last night
Silhouetted by the evening light
Sitting at an old upright
And we sang together
And the sun began to rise
And bathed us with her light
And all the world seemed right
The moment that you entered

Lost in the Crowd
04:49
|
|||
Is there some secret code to pass
Into this life everyone else seems to be living?
Or am I observing the first layer
Like a mural on the concrete of a building?
These people look like salesmen as they walk their normal beat
Trying to prove themselves to everyone they meet
Loving those they don't trust, failing those they need
Binding them in promises they know they cannot keep
So I shut my eyes tightly
And I listen to the wind pass through the trees
As if a message is containted
Within the soft and swelling whisper of the leaves
Maybe it's all true, maybe I went too far in my head
Waiting for that lightbulb to illuminate again
Sometimes there's a flicker, sometimes that flicker stays
As I'm inching closer to the outlet of this maze
All that's gotten me to dreaming of getting up and leaving
Cause I couldn't see before what I'm seeing now
Life isn't forever, things could be so much better
For that little runaway lost in the crowd
We all have the same home, a small rock hurdling through space
Hoping that some comet doesn't wipe out our whole race
And when I put it that way, every problem seems so dumb
I got one shot at this little life, I best not screw it up
All that's gotten me to dreaming of getting up and leaving
Cause I couldn't see before what I'm seeing now
Life isn't forever, things could be so much better
For that little runaway lost in the crowd

Failure Sounds So Fun
04:51
|
|||
I ran into an old friend down on Central Avenue
He asked me how I'm doing, I said I didn't have a clue
"The days are going slower, but the years are going quick
But anyway, I'm okay. How are you? How ya been?"
He said, "I haven't had a cigarette since the first
But the smell of it's still clinging to my shirt
For all the things in life that I've cut out
The smoke has long since vanished, but the odor sticks around"
"And I know it can be done
But failure sounds so fun"
I stand in Arizona, but there's sand still in my shoes
From the shores of California, whose offer I refused
I guess that our past follows us no matter where we go
It's a relic, it's a souvenir, it's an antique, it's a ghost
Like the stars that fade and die
Whose light still fills our sky
The stone in that cathedral was laid by someone's hand
About a thousand years ago, in the quiet streets of France
Everything we know of him is lost to history
Like a message written in the sand, that's washed out by the sea
But that stone is still sitting straight and tall
And it's holding up those old historic walls
Like a shout in that cathedral, and its reverberated sound
The noise has long since vanished, but the echo sticks around
So in that short and nameless life
He managed to stay alive

I Always Will
05:05
|
|||
Trust me, I know that hopeless feeling
To see the world's beauty, but fail to find its meaning
To see the hours pass like a broken hourglass
Whose center is too wide to slow the sand
Trust me, I know that hopeless pain
To love something so much and watch it slip away
To want another chance to feel their leathered hands
Or see a smile grow upon their face
Every time I raise my pen, I'm bothered by a question
Does every twist of fate have to have a lesson?
Or can I just let it go, say that I don't know
And be more of a compass than a map?
I wish there was something I could do
The words I have are not enough to give to you
In those battles we can't fight, those demons we can't kill
Just know that I love you and I always will

Our Fathers' Sins
02:58
|
|||
Sing your praises if you must
It's not hard to readjust
To a world that was built for you
But the binding's getting weak
And it's tearing at the seams
But you can't see that from your distant view
The Wall Street Journal reads
Like a comedy
The only difference being
No one's laughing
And the cycle now begins
We repeat our fathers' sins
And I won't call that a win
By any measure
So sit back and watch your play
And take the money far away
From the people who are poor and thin
And from your quiet golden halls
Go ahead and build your wall
Cause that worked so well in Berlin
I thought we'd learn by now
To take a different route
To call somebody out
When there is hatred
But the cycle now begins
We repeat our fathers' sins
And I won't call that a win
By any measure

A Matter of Time
04:46
|
|||
Bottles fill the dining room
Pills are on the floor
Dishes fill the kitchen sink
He's been right here before
"The stars don't seem to shine tonight,"
He mutters to himself
He's staring out the window
His mind is somewhere else
And it's only a matter of time
It's only a matter of time
It's only a matter of time
He thought that he could make himself invincible
By building walls wherever he would go
But knowing everything shows you know nothing
And showing nothing means you've got a lot to show
She told him, "There seems to be a lack of understanding
Where neither side is fully seen nor heard
As if I'm caught up in the melody
And you're caught up in the words"
And it's only a matter of time
It's only a matter of time
It's only a matter of time
With every passing lover
And every passing friend
He starts each new beginning
While thinking of the end
Well, maybe there's some merit to that method
In order to fulfill our only task
To separate the things that last forever
From the things that never last

Sufficient Reply
05:47
|
|||
The neon lights flickered like the sun upon a lake
Sitting in the window of an old cafe
And the waitress stares into the street
Watching rain bounce off the sidewalk like a trampoline
And she smiles and lets out a sigh
A small but sufficient reply
Then she picks up the rags and starts washing the counters again
Some children play a game on a quiet street
Making up the rules as it's happening
And with each attack, they laugh and whine
Until their mother stunts the fun and calls them back inside
It's crazy what they can create
A world to which they can escape
And if the sun's still up, they'll go out after dinner again
There sits a lonely cross in the median
And the cars all drive on past without seeing it
Then the light turns red, and the traffic slows
Some stare out their rear view mirrors, some stare at their phones
But a few eyes wander around
And see it there, propped up in the ground
Then the light turns green, and the traffic starts moving again

Tourists and Shells
03:09
|
|||
When you told me you were leaving for good
Half of me hoped you wouldn't, half of me hoped your would
Now I'm standing on the Huntington Pier
Wishing you were with me, not wishing you were here
And it's a long, long way to the parking lot
So I'll toss my keys in the sea
And I'll stand right here, among tourists and shells
And see what that does for me
When you told me that the fire was out
I could only think of that new man around
I saw you two dancing last Saturday night
The happiness together, the loneliness inside
And it's a long, long way to get my old life back
So I think that I'll journey ahead
And sometime later when you're looking for me
Why don't you look for yourself instead?

Gain Something New
04:29
|
|||
Putting his old life up onto a shelf
Stepping out of the world he made for himself
He has a suitcase in his hand, and a ticket for the train
Tapping his foot nervously, and looking down the tracks toward his fate
He has his hair like he just got out of a fight
His shirt is a size too big and his shoes aren't tied
He has a cross around his neck, hasn't prayed to God in years
Serving as a promise - the things you throw away don't disappear
Looking in the distance, he sees the setting sun
Illuminate the city he never learned to love
He shuts his eyes and turns around, he's got nothing left to do
To give something up is to gain something new
